Kalevala 1999 is poet and translator Kai Nieminen's rewritten version of the Finnish national epic Kalevala, published by the Finnish Literature Society to mark the 150 year-anniversary since the publication of the most commonly read version of the mythology.
The original Kalevala was compiled from traditional oral poetry by Elias Lönnrot (1802-1884) and published in 1835 (first version) and 1849 (final version).
